Diplomacy

  • Engaging with diplomatic missions, including within the United Nations system, (Human Rights Council, Human Rights Treaty Bodies, Special Procedures, Environment Programme, etc) to advance holistic legal frameworks
  • Fostering constructive relationships with key State delegations and UN Major Groups to support effective human rights governance and environmental protection

Advocacy in key international fora

  • Leveraging relationships with delegates, civil society, and cross-constituency groups to influence more effective human rights-based international policy
  • Using case studies from partners around the world to demonstrate real world impacts of bad policy making, in order to improve implementation
  • Engaging in treaty and international negotiating processes, including the Conference of the Parties of the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventions, the United Nations Environment Assembly, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committees for a new treaty to end plastic pollution, the UN Oceans Conference, and UN Framework Convention on Climate Change. 

Legal analysis and research

  • Undertaking timely research and analysis to support emerging or ongoing legal cases and policy decisions, for example on legal mechanisms to hold polluters accountable, finance mechanisms for climate loss and damage, the health impacts of the plastics crisis, and the impacts of the planned petrochemical infrastructure buildout in Europe
  • Submitting amicus curiae to support ongoing litigation and advisory opinion processes to clarify the duties of States and private actors to protect human rights in the context of climate change, including at the International Court of Justice, the European Court of Human Rights, the International Tribunal on the Law of the Sea, and the InterAmerican Court of Human Rights
  • Publishing reports, briefing notes, and white papers to spotlight and amplify frontline and Global South voices, and/or to equip frontline and Global South partners with analysis and legal arguments to protect their rights

Capacity building and coalition building 

  • Facilitating connections and conversations between decisionmakers and affected communities / vulnerable groups to ensure those most affected by environmental decisions are able to participate in them
  • Convening cross-constituency dialogues through which to build strong coalitions around common human rights and environmental goals, such as an annual Human Rights Dialogue dinner
